Discovery and Diagnosis

Nandita was born with a congenital anomaly but was visibly a normal child until she was diagnosed with KyphoScoliosis, at the age of 3. KyphoScoliosis is a medical condition in which the spine is bent forwards and sideways. Every growth spurt would result in an increase in the deformity and also carry with it the risk of lower limb paralysis. After research it was understood that the only hope was major surgery, but the prognosis given was very grave, with the possibility of total paralysis and even the loss of life not being ruled out. So how did the parents find out that their child was afflicted with this condition? Call it intuition, call it divine grace, but for a child that had no symptoms and no evident deformity, it was a miracle that an overanxious mother’s fears resulted in this discovery. It was purely on a hunch with no scientific basis or proof that Nandita’s mother, felt even in her child’s infancy that something was not alright. Belonging to a family of medical experts, her fears were considered unfounded and the ramblings of a first time mother. Not one to give up, this persistent mom, kept knocking on doors until someone took her seriously enough to allow for an x-ray, if only to prove her wrong. But deep within she feared she might be right and her world fell apart when the doctors confirmed that Nandita had KyphoScoliosis. Denial and despair gripped the family for whom life was never going to be the same again, but somewhere they also knew that they had to put up the fight of a lifetime if they wanted to do the best by their daughter. What followed was and is truly inspirational.
